Hot Dogs! (And their paws)
If you’re anything like me, your dog is like your child, so OF COURSE I had to make my babies a little something.
Besides, who could say no to these faces? (Yes, they have their own blog, hence the watermark lol)
We recently moved in December to a house with a big yard for my dogs to run around. When it snowed we were bringing the girls in the garage and letting them warm up by the heater to dry off and I got to thinking that they should have something to protect their feet against cold and ice.
And I’m sorry, but I REFUSE to buy booties for my dogs! They might be my kids, but they’re still animals that are made to run around outside.
When I was researching paw wax and protectants, many recipes I found online called for calendula oil which is kind of expensive where I live (like $14/oz for premade oil and $18/lb for the flowers to make your own oil, expensive), so I did some research and came up with something that works in the cold AND helps protect against hot ground in summer!
So without further ado:
2 tbsp Olive oil
2 tbsp Coconut oil
1.5 tbsp Shea Butter
2 tbsp Beeswax
Melt all ingredients in a double boiler and mix together really well. Then pour into a tin or other container that’s easy to rub on a paw.
You can also add essential oils if you want for additional benefits.
I put it in the fridge for about half an hour to harden up…(ok I forgot about it for a while, it only takes about 5-10 minutes.
Then just rub your pets paw on it and maybe leave them outside for a bit, it will need time to absorb and they will try to lick some of it off most likely. We have adorable dog prints all over our back deck.
